Studio Photography Workshop to Take You From Using Constant Lights to Confidence With Strobes

Walk in with your camera. Walk out able to light a studio shoot with strobes: sharper, cleaner, more consistent images, and the confidence to say yes to brand and commercial work.

Capped at six photographers, so it's 100% hands-on. $349.

What It Opens Up

Say Yes to the Shoots That Need Strobes

Brand, product, ecommerce and campaign work all expect the same thing: clean, sharp, consistent images from the first frame to the last. That's what strobes do. Once you're confident with them, those are the jobs you go after, not the ones you turn down.

  • Studio work that looks commercial, not improvised
  • The confidence to quote on brand and product shoots
  • A whole set that matches, frame after frame
  • Faster setups, so more of every session is shooting
  • Subjects who relax, because no one's squinting into an LED
  • Walk into any studio and know where every light goes

Who's Teaching

I'm Brendan, Owner of Bohemia Bay Studio

I spent eight years as a professional photographer before taking over Bohemia Bay Studio two years ago.

Since then I've watched hundreds of sessions come through the studio, and most photographers still reach for constant lights, even on shoots where strobes would give them a better result. It's rarely a talent problem. It's confidence.

This workshop is how I fix that: small, practical and hands-on, so you leave ready to use strobes on your very next shoot.

Why Strobes

Constant Light Shows You the Light. Strobes Give You Control

Constant lights are a good place to start. But they run out of power right when you need it, push your ISO up, and make it hard to freeze movement or match colour across a set.

Strobes solve all of that. They just feel risky until someone shows you how, and nobody wants to learn on a client's time. That's what this workshop is for.

What strobes give you

  • Power: shoot at a lower ISO 100 and higher apertures for clean files and deep focus
  • Frozen motion: a short flash stops hair, fabric and movement
  • Consistent colour: the same light every frame, so editing is faster
  • A comfortable subject: no bright LED in their eyes, so no squinting
  • Room to shape: enough power for big modifiers and soft, wrapping light

Constant light still has its place. It's great for video, and for seeing light as you shape it. You'll leave knowing which to use when.

Built Around You

Your Clients. Your Work. Your Name on It.

Bohemia Bay is a studio, not a photography business. We're not here to win your clients. We're here to help you win them, with the space, the gear, and now the confidence to light it properly.

The Handbook

A Studio Guide to Lighting

Every attendee takes home A Studio Guide to Lighting, our printed handbook. Each setup is mapped out step by step: where the model, camera, strobes and V-flats go. Here are four of the five setups inside, free to use on your next session.

A Studio Guide to Lighting, the printed handbook every attendee takes home
Soft beauty lighting map: strobe with 150cm octabox in front of the model, V-flats either side

Beauty and Headshots

Soft Beauty

Soft, even light and smooth skin. One light does almost all the work.

  • Model in the centre, camera in front
  • Strobe with the 150cm octabox at B, facing the model
  • V-flats at D and E. White on both sides for the softest look, black on one side for more shape
  • A reflector or white card under the face to bounce light up
Dramatic lighting map: strobe with 150cm octabox angled in from the side, black V-flat opposite

Moody Portraits

Dramatic

One light and one V-flat. Deep shadow with a clean edge.

  • Strobe with the 150cm octabox at C, angled in at the model
  • V-flat at D, black side facing the model
  • Raise the strobe and octabox for more drama
  • Move the V-flat closer or further to control the shadow side
Stark white ecommerce lighting map: key strobe with octabox in front, background strobe behind the V-flats

Full-Length Ecommerce

Stark White

A clean, bright white background that stays the same across a whole collection.

  • Strobe with the 150cm octabox at B, facing the model
  • A second strobe behind the V-flats, firing at the back wall
  • V-flats at D and E, black side facing the model, for shape
  • Keep the V-flats between the model and the background strobe to avoid blowout
Luxury side shadow lighting map: octabox at 45 degrees to the model, white V-flat on the shadow side

Premium Ecommerce

Luxury Side Shadow

A soft 45-degree shadow that adds depth without losing the clean look.

  • Strobe with the 150cm octabox at C, at 45 degrees to the model
  • V-flat at D, white side facing the model, to lift the shadow side
  • Use a white or off-white backdrop
  • Swing the octabox further round for a deeper shadow
